All you need to know about AdBlue™

Reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, and as a result, helping to protect the environment.

What is AdBlue™?

Diesel engines are now required to meet tough NOx standards to help control air pollution. The preferred method involves injecting a high purity fluid called Diesel Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue™) into the exhaust system. AdBlue™ works seamlessly with absolutely no effect on the performance of your engine - your driving experience will remain as enjoyable and as efficient as ever.

What does it do?

When your vehicle is utilising AdBlue™, the Nitrogen Oxide produced by your diesel engine will be converted into nitrogen and steam. This considerably reduces the emissions of harmful Nitrogen Oxides, a considerable source of atmospheric pollution.

AdBlue™ is designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

AdBlue™ is a harmless substance, and very easy to use. It is not a fuel, nor a fuel additive - it is a simple but effective high purity urea solution. It must be used in a dedicated tank on your vehicle, and refilled when required. It is essential that you refill prior to depletion, as your vehicle will not run without it.

How do I refill AdBlue™?

You can refill AdBlue™ yourself, although we recommend that you ask your Toyota Dealer / Authorised Repairer. Below are some step by step instructions on how to refill AdBlue™.

  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface.

Push down on the bottle of AdBlue™

Refill AdBlue™ slowly so that it does not spill. Do not remove the bottle until it is fully empty.

  • Open the AdBlue™ tank cap.

Check that no AdBlue™ remains in the bottle.

Repeat steps 3-5 until approximately 3.8L (4.0qt, 3.3 lmp.qt.) or more of AdBlue™ have been refilled.

  • Insert a bottle of AdBlue™ and tighten.

    Close the AdBlue™ tank cap.

Then check that the engine starts - this may take a few seconds longer than normal.

Important points to keep in mind.

When using AdBlue™ there are some clear rules that should be followed. The vehicle will not start if the AdBlue™ level is too low.

When refilling AdBlue™

Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in damage to the vehicle parts, paint, etc.

  • Do not use urea solution other than AdBlue™.
  • If AdBlue™ is added at a rate of more than 3 L (3.2 qt., 2.6 Imp. qt.) per minute the AdBlue™ may overflow from the refill port. Do not use refilling equipment available at gas stations or elsewhere, as the equipment will add more than 3 L (3.2 qt., 2.6 Imp.qt.) of AdBlue™ per minute.
  • If AdBlue™ comes into contact with any painted surfaces on the vehicle, immediately wash the affected areas with water.
  • If AdBlue™ is spilled inside the engine compartment, immediately wipe it with a wet cloth.

When storing AdBlue™

Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in damage to vehicle parts, paint, etc., and changes in the chemical compounds of AdBlue™ may cause unpleasant odors.

  • Do not leave AdBlue™ inside the vehicle.
  • Tightly seal AdBlue™ containers and store them in a cool, dry location with good ventilation and no exposure to direct sunlight.
